Sophia Beckmon, a senior at Oregon City, finished second in the long jump on Friday in the U.S.
Under-20 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, with his 20-foot
opening jump, 0 hi inch, holding. we advanced to six rounds of competition to take second place
in the U-20 World Championships in Cali, Colombia, in early August.
"I set goals for the entire meeting," said Beckmon. "In this case, I had to go 21 (feet) or form a team, and I did it."
However, that dream turned into a nightmare later in the day when he learned that because he
did not have a passport, he had to leave his place in the world team.
"They said I had time for tomorrow (to get it), but it's not possible," he said in a statement Friday. "To be honest, I'm angry and upset."
